Once a Coach Great!, March 20, 2008
For anyone that has ever played high school football or been around a small town where high school football rules the land this is a book you must read. Coach Mick Peterson intertwines the lives of a coach, a player, a few families and his team into this book that shows us the numerous ups and downs that go with not just high school football, but everyday life.
I am not normally much of a big book reader but I finished this book in three days. I could not keep the book down wanting to know what would happen to each of the characters involved in the story. I was definitely on the edge of my seat and with the turn of each page came something new.
Overall, this book was great and I hope others find this book as enjoyable as I did. Mick Peterson did a great job! I can't wait for his next book.
This is Bonnie Hutton, aka Bonnie Jones from MCHS. We spoke at the reunion a couple of years ago. I have had a few recent email exchanges with Mike Skopes, after learning about his book that is due out soon. He mentioned your book, so I ordered it from Amazon and recently finished reading it. Congratulations! I enjoyed the book and wanted to let you know. If I ever get to another reunion, I’ll have to bring it for an autograph!
My name is Andrew Porth. I teach Special Ed. here at Morris High School, and I just finished reading your book and I just wanted to commend you for writing a great story. You brought the characters to life very well, and had me drawn into the story from the start. You painted a great picture of what high school football is and what it means to a community.
Again, great job and thanks for putting your thoughts onto paper for us all to enjoy.
Mick:
I've been reading the book and it's really good! (I shouldn't be surprised). The format (short chapters) really holds one's interest, since we gotta get back to this person or that to find out what's next. Thanks for the autographed copy. It's a keeper.

What a great book! I can't wait for my daughter to read it. It took me a while to write this, that's why it's a separate document. Take care!

HEY Coach Pete!
I had an opportunity to read the book. VERY GOOD! I am recommending it to some of the coaches here!! I definitely saw a lot of references that I could relate to and brought back a lot of old memories.

Congratulations on your accomplishments as a coach, a teacher and as an author and I want to wish you a very happy retirement after this school year. I wish the very best for you and your family.
Lastly, I will be watching the New York Times best seller’s list for your book and I look forward to wait in line to get my copy autographed.

Mick: Just wanted you to know...your book traveled to the Dominican
Republic...I started it on the plane and finished it on the beach.
Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Glad you made it back, hope it was enjoyable!
Personally, I can't wait for the next book! Thanks again for the interview
and when you get your next one published...be sure to let me know!

Hey Mick,
I just finished your book tonight. Actually my wife, Jan, read it first as soon as I got it about a week ago. I was busy with work and my own project and she grabbed it. Not well versed in football, she still appreciated the story and liked the idea of the author being an old pal! She reads two books a week!
I'd love to talk with you about the book and the story which I enjoyed very much. A few scenes reminded me of my football days. Your story was well crafted and I finished it quickly as I kept wanting to find out what happed next. I particularly got a kick out of Bubba getting punched by his son and the hamburger scene when the guys put two and two together about the car crash.
The coach's appeal speech was awesome.
Congratulations!

Comments on the Book--Homecoming

Hey there Coach Pete!
I've been meaning to shoot you an email for quite some time now, ever since I finished reading your first book. Anyways, I just finished the second book. I don't remember reading a book in such a short time, actually reading every word and enjoying it anyways. You truly captured the essence of high school football and these two books epitomize what it feels like to be under the lights on a Friday night in any small town.
These books were able to give me a little piece of home, the life I used to live, while I'm here at such a big school. I've changed so much since I have been gone from home and I miss who I once was, but I just wanted to thank you for the memories. There's not a day gone by that I don't think about what it would be like to play under those lights again.
The days of being a Pontiac Indian feel so distant, almost as if they never happened in reality. I'm just trying not to look back in regret but deep down I know that I could have done more, more in high school and more on the field. If anything at all, these books have reminded me to not let the present slip through my fingers again. In my own way, I've think that I've had my own homecoming.
"It will simply be a moment when a person finds that inner peace in a place that offered no such promise in prior experience or time. It will simply allow a person to recognize who he is now, not what he was before."
Chad Nelson
I finished Homecoming a few days ago. This time you managed to be less ambiguous with sources for characters and names as I noted in a prior email (at least with names I know). It certainly is a good thing to acknowledge the old pals and their contributions to your memories by including them in a story. I'm sure they feel appreciated as well as excited to be named in a book. If you recall my mentioning how I felt about playing with you guys during our senior year, Smitty, Tom, Lenny, Rick and all the others, you will understand why I hold those days dear. The closeness of a group of guys playing the great game of high school football certainly is joy to remember. Both your books helped me to recall those days of youthful energy and physical abilities long time gone.
Thanks Mick.

Mick: Read the book this weekend...and enjoyed it...now, who's the phone
call from? I have my idea but,
Then again guess I won't know until the next one is out!!! It kind of took
me back to my high school
Homecoming days! It's changed a little~I think we had more fun, maybe
that's just because I was younger then!!!
Enjoyed the reminiscing along with the great read! Great job...again!

Mick - I just finished your book and I LOVED IT. Now I can't wait until the next one to see who was on the phone. I hope it will be done soon.

Coach,
Steve told me you retired; congratulations on a long and successful coaching career! It's been 20 years--almost to the day--that I played football for you, but I still use those lessons everyday to keep myself, my two boys, and the young airmen I work with ontrack.
I wish you and your family all the best.
Respectfully,
